Why People Commit Crime

People commit crime  for numerous reasons, some of which are "reasonable", and "respectable" and others that simply do not justify the crime what so ever, and wouldn't make sense unless you were in their brain, sometimes the person themselves doesn't understand why they chose their actions.I will be listing only a few of the reasons.

Environment and Status Upbringing: This refers to where people live/grow up, who they grow up around, and what social status they're apart of. For example if you grow up in poverty and all your friends and family sell drugs and gang-bang to meet ends meet then you are extremely likely to follow in their footsteps, you're almost integrated/intertwined with that life style. If the only way you wont be shunned and beaten is to just the gang you probably will, and you could go get a minimum wage job and barely/not be able to make it by not to mention just work the stupid job, or you could hang around on the block with your boys on the block selling crack and have even quite a bit of extra spending money... which sounds more appealing. And in impoverished places there are more cases of drug/alcohol abuse and domestic abuse, growing up around things like this can cause history to repeat itself in many cases. If you are broke or homeless and starving with no means to get the food or clothes you are somewhat forced to steal which if you ask me is quite reasonable, do or die kind of situations.

Emotion and Substance: It almost goes without saying that people can make the wrong decision when their mind is clouded by emotion. You do not think clearly when you are over loaded by an emotion. For example if your girl/boyfriend cheats on you you are way more likely to assault or murder them or the person they cheated on you with because you are likely to get filled with: anger, jealousy, sadness, confusions and frustration. Same thing as when you're horny, most people never plan on rapping anyone but when you get "excited" maybe have a few drinks and cant get what you want, one thing can lead to another that would not have happened if you weren't horny/drunk. If you are an addicted and feel as though you need your fix to literally survive, It can lead you to go to extreme lengths and do pretty much anything to get your fix.

Mental Health: People with mental health issues can often have trouble making rational decisions, can react to things fast and end up committing crime. Things such as schizophrenia obviously hamper peoples abilities the think rationally and most times are simply doing what "the voice tells them". Psychopaths are almost a whole category, they can have dangerous obsessions, and the main thing is that they lack compassion, they know what they are doing is "wrong" but they lack the emotions to feel bad for someone they see them more as objects almost.

Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka.
Convicted of drugging, obducting, raping, torturing, and murdering young girls. It is hard to imagine why someone would commit these acts. When the two first met they quickly discovered that they both shared the same graphic, violent, psychotic, sexual desires. As the two fell in love there rolls quickly became defined Paul as the master and Karla as the "slave," she would do anything to make him happy. It was mainly Paul who made the step to actualy take action with the "fetish" and sense Karla would do anything for him, she assisted, and would louwer victims for them, when your a young girl its much easier to trust another woman. She lowered many victims in, she even sacrificed her own little sister to her boyfriend.

The reasons I think Paul committed these crimes was mental illness, to kidnap and torture little girls you are simply not well, sure his up bringing probably had something to do with the way his mind worked, but to some it all up, he was crazy and had insane obsessions, and fantasies  I would even classify him as a psychopath. For Karla I would say the same thing besides a few differences she was also crazy, but was also crazy in love with Paul which means emotion was a key factor, she needed his love so badly which I think suggests she had a very troubled childhood, AKA her upbringing. They both were crazy, but probably had a lot to do with how they were raised.

  1. Hi Shaun. Thanks for the detailed and thoughtful post. Paul Bernardo fits in with Psychology theories (Behaviour) as a forensic psychological analysis would put him on the Anti Social Personality Disorder spectrum (not crazy - that's the wrong term). Karla Homolka (Teale), or I think she's now Leanne Bordelais, is a more interesting question. I am not too sure she fits within the Criminal Psychology theory...what do you think?
